My Thoughts: An Appeal To The New Commander-In-Chief
I am a serving member of the United States Armed Forces. Officially, I am supposed to remain completely non-partisan, but the fact that I am a citizen of the United States precludes that notion. If I, or anyone else serving this nation in uniform, were to be completely non-partisan, we would be denied the right to vote. Having said that, I am going to fly flagrantly in the face of policy and air publicly my opinions vis-a-vis you, our new Commander-In-Chief.
I did not vote for you, President Obama. I still have unanswered questions regarding not only your agenda and political ideology, but also your legal right to hold office. Why, Mr President, have you continued to withhold your birth certificate from public view? What are you hiding? Why is it that the people of this great nation have propelled into the most powerful position in the world someone who would not otherwise be granted the security clearance that I hold?
These questions, however, are moot at this point. President Obama you have, albeit stumblingly, been sworn in as the President of the United States.
I will say is this: I have become what Franklin D. Roosevelt termed “the loyal opposition”.
I will continue to carry out my duties as before, with the devotion and zeal imbued into my being by the almost 230 years of military service, predating the United States of America itself, running in my family. From a colonial militiaman at Cowpens to a Confederate at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Spotsylvania Courthouse; from the Bataan Death March to Khe Sanh; from the Bay of Pigs and soon to Baghdad, continuing a legacy of service in defense of home and hearth, so will another West march forward. I do not regard this to be an obligation of citizenship: instead, I regard it to be an honor, a duty and a privilege. Were I to shirk this responsibilty, a hundred ghosts clad in blue, grey, khaki, and green would rise to chatise me for not fulfilling a familial habit of service in uniform.
As I stated before Mr. President, I have my doubts about your ability to lead this nation from the crisis in which we find ourselves entangled. However, this nation, in its “founding documents”, properly saw fit to empower the voice of the majority of voters with the selection of the civilian leadership which guides the course that we collectively navigate. As a citizen, I pray that you will prove my doubts to be in error. As a soldier, my life may depend upon it.
Mr President, my appeal is plain. Prove me wrong. Give me a reason to vote for your re-election. Show me that you will not lead us further into the unstable morass of socialism that has caused the nations of Europe to founder. Show me that you not only have the desire to negotiate when possible, but also the ability to recognize those who cannot be negotiated with, and the resolve to deal with them appropriately. Show me that the ideals of personal responsibility and self-reliance are not lost forever in this great nation, and that the tenets outlined by the Founding Fathers will not be tossed aside for political capital. Show me, President Obama, that the hopes and dreams of the American people will not be undercut by the selfish whims of those either lacking the desire to actually work hard and persevere or those with wallets fat enough to bend your ear. Show me, Mr. President, and prove me wrong.
