I’m Not Training My Kids
For my first post here on Military Pundits, I wanted to take a look at the massive amount of spending that has been going on in DC over the last few weeks and a comment made by JimK, a blogger I’ve read for years.
…They just want to try to prove Reagan (he’s representative of the movement, it’s not necessarily Reagan himself) wrong and train a new generation to expect Uncle Sam to deal with everything.
That’s the part Bob Krum missed. This is also about training the next two or three generations to be dependent on the federal government. Hence the maneuvering to belittle and marginalize any state government that doesn’t want a federal bailout. If no one expects the federal government to actually be small, there’s no reason to try to make it small, is there?
Emphasis is mine and that is what I really want to concentrate on. If you want to see what Jim was talking about, check out his post.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I will not train my daughter and soon-to-be-born son to be dependant on anyone but themselves to ensure they have a comfortable and successful life. I will not allow my children to rely on the federal, state, or local government for anything as long as there is not an absolute need, such as disability or the death of their parents.
Looking at this move to make our future generations depend on the government scares me to death. I do not trust any government bureaucracy as far as I can throw them. There is only one person I know that will take care of me no matter what; myself. Thinking Congress, or Obama, or anyone else for that matter has your best interest along with your neighbor’s, parents, friends, co-works, etc at heart is foolish. Continue thinking that and you’ll get what you deserve.
We all need to take a step back from the horrible economic situation we’re in. Forget about who is responsible, that doesn’t matter at all now. Just concentrate on what is important like getting out of this mess not through big government spending, but hard work, sacrifice, and good old fashioned blood, sweat, and tears. Tell your kids about what it means to take care of yourself and how the government is not there to do it for you.

Well said. I also teach my kids that the only people we should rely on is ourselves (and to a lesser extent each other). They are very politically aware as they love to watch the news with me and even listen to AM radio.
What IS important to teach our kids is fiscal responsibility, because we KNOW the government isn’t teaching that – at least not by example.
Hear Hear! I concur most wholeheartedly! What never ceases to amaze me is the mental disconnect that so much of the population has, failing to recognize (or just ignoring) the fact that virtually everything the government touches, it screws up. Why would ANYONE want to rely on the government for ANYTHING?
Exactly, CJ. My dad did a great job raising me to be aware that fiscal responsibility is very important and that conservative values will allow anyone to prosper if they work for it. I can only hope I teach my children the same.
Absolutely, positively right!!!
Agreed, although I’d note that standing up and doing for yourself is not a conservative value or a liberal value, but an American value.
Frankly I do rely on the government to provide that which I as one person cannot:
1. Physicaly security for me and those that I’m responsible for.
2. A healthy environment to grow in.
3. A level econonmic playing field.

I too concur! We have taught our kids, 17 and 14 to rely on themselves. They know that in order to have a good life they must be able to work hard to achieve it. They know no one owes them an education, a home, a lifestyle, and that they have to trust in themselves. They have also been told that you do NOT get anything for nothing, and you should be wary of anyone selling that line. My famous line is…”In God we trust, all others we check out.”
I wonder what ever happened to personal responsibility? My grandfather brought his family here from Canada in 1960, built a business from the ground up and made a name for himself in this small town. The business is still in our family today and we have 3 generations working in it. Wasn’t that the American dream at one point? If I wanted something – I had to work for it. Nothing was ever handed to me. I never expected someone to just give me a car, a house, pay my bills, pay for my schooling, etc. I worked for it. I don’t understand the sense of entitlement people seem to have….but, I’m getting off topic. Good post Marcus!
Thanks for the great comments, everyone.
Something I’ll add from David’s comment.
1. Physicaly security for me and those that I’m responsible for.
- I assume you’re talking about the military/police. I would never expect you to stand up an entire army or police force for just you and your family. That IS the role of the government and I have no complains about everyone expecting that. However, you can take some personal responsibility and become a responsible firearm owner.
2. A healthy environment to grow in.
- Another good example of something you can’t do on your own. Without getting into the whole environmental debate, government’s role does exist.
3. A level economic playing field.
- Once again, no complaints. Everyone has the same chance to invest, get credit (as long as they earn what is given!), etc.
Good comment, David.
Thanks, Marcus. I will probably not become a gun owner at this point. I have decreased vision that if I didn’t grab my glasses at the same time as the gun, I would probably shoot myself. I mitigate this by keeping a baseball bat closeby and have an alarm system tied to the police department.

ARNG Sgt,
Good post. My family came here from Poland in the 20’3/30′s. No handouts for them. They started a butcher shop in Bay City Michigan, my father was born here, and he served in the USN for 21 years. People can take care of themselves, we have seen it, and we need to get back to it before we destroy what has made this country great.
