Obama, just say No to Spam Arms Races

Now, I honestly have issues with political spam to begin with. A lot of it has to do with that in the work I do, people assume that I want to hear everything, and I mean absolutely everything, remotely connected to the war, or peace, etc. A selection of the chain emails that I have in my inbox includes:

“Unity Walk And Rally For Health Care Reform” comes from the ACLU

“Obama’s Experiment on…Doctors” comes from the Republican National Committee. Republican National Committee, you’re so not even in the right ballpark, but nice try.Is that like, “She protested our convention, she must vote Republican”, or are you guys buying Legion or VFW email lists? They also want me to join them on some conference call to fight Obama’s health care plan. Don’t hold your breath, nice Republican lady.

Care2 action wants me to know to “Let Seniors Choose Their Long-Term Health Care!”

NOW wishes me to be aware that “Women’s Lives-for Sale?” amendments to the healthcare reform are evil.

All in all, it’s enough to make someone breathe a deep sigh and go for their newspaper, where at least they won’t be attacked by spam emails. A nice copy of, say, the Stars & Stripes. What story could they have? “White House goes Viral on Health Care” Oh, clever wording. What will they think of next. Wait, wait. “Administration uses chain e-mail to counter critics”???

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!

David Axelrod, you of “Let’s start a chain email of our own”, you are officially on my shit list.

Look. Among the many great things that the White House has stood for, it has included /not resorting to tawdry sideshow antics to get things accomplished/. Like, say, sending your citizens more spam email that they will have to delete. The answer to “our opponents are sending crazy spam emails about us” is NOT “we’d better start sending crazy spam emails too”!

Personally, I’m very lucky that few Obamites have my email address, and so I’m unlikely to get this thing forwarded on fifty times. However, hard-core Democrats and Obamajesus fans…you have my sympathy. I wonder how long it’s going to take before anything from whitehouse.gov is automatically directed to nationwide spam filters?
